Jagriti Vihara echoes of hollowing and laughter
There are 15 girls attending a one-year course at Jagriti Vihara. They come without exception from extremely poor conditions.
They belong to different Adivasi groups with partly different languages. They have all earlier been working in the coal mine, at building sites, at brickworks and with road building. The 15 girls were chosen among more than 100 applicants.
Here they show themselves in fine uniforms: orange blouses and dark blue skirts, white socks and white cloth shoes.

The eight newly employed field workers, the animators, act excellently. As they have been chosen in a democratic way people have confidence in them to lead the work, since they now have got certain education. Three of the field workers are married women.

Planting trees
This huge banyan tree stands at Jagriti Vihara, a whole world of greenery and beauty. Under there is shade in a pillared hall of air-roots that have rooted. The love of trees and the knowledge of all good effects from growing trees, especially fruit trees, is a motive force for the tree planting that emanates from Jagriti Vihara. Every year people from the surrounding villages can buy cheep plants and learn to plant and take care of the trees. In the long run means a good change, the soil is tied and the tree gives good fruit for nothing year after year. |

About voluntary work
There are many inquiries about the possibility to work as a volunteer at Jagriti Vihara. Unfortunately it is not possible at the moment to receive volunteers there. If you want to follow the development you are welcome to become a member of ”Friends of Jagriti Vihara”. You will then receive 4 members´ letters a year with fresh information about this interesting and important work.
A way to visit Jagriti Vihara is to attend the one-term course ”Course about the World with three-weeks India journey” at Ljungskile
folkhögskola or if you want to study in Norway, "Internasjonale
spørsmål og media" at Ringerike
folkehøgskole. These two courses make journeys in India with visits to Jagriti Vihara.
